Agency/Firm's Mission:
Founded in 1987, Heads Up is a partnership between Head-Royce School and the Oakland Unified School district (OUSD) that provides academic enrichment and support for underserved middle school students. The program strives to improve the public school performance of students beginning in sixth grade by: creating academic and social support in the classroom, offering new perspectives through speakers and field trips, setting expectations for students'' capabilities, providing a support system through middle school and high school, and enhancing preparation for college.
Value of the internship to the Agency/Firm:
The faculty includes seasoned educators from Head-Royce School and other private and public schools, as well as college students interested in pursuing careers in teaching. The college interns will be considered full time classroom teachers and will serve as role models to our Heads Up students.
Value of the internship to the Intern:
This is a paid position that provides the interns with an opportunity to enhance their teaching skills and gain valuable work experience, as well as work with underserved middle school children from the Oakland Public Schools. Consider this a chance to "give back" and to help a community in need.
Job Description:
The interns will work for six-weeks from mid-June to the end of July, Monday-Friday, 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, teaching 6th-8th graders either math, reading, writing, science, or a recreational activity. The interns will each have a mentor teacher to guide and advise in all aspects of teaching, as well as a supervisor to evaluate and assess classroom management and provide teacher training the week before the program begins.
Management Goals:
The interns will meet with their mentor teacher two to three times a week and will be visited once a week by the supervisor. The interns will be full time classroom teachers and be responsible for curriculum development as well as its administration. The interns will also be asked to write report cards assessing their students'' progress and be advisors to assigned groups of Heads Up students.
Special Job Requirements:
Interns will need to find housing and transportation. We will provide some assistance in this area, but the main responsibility is on the intern. If the intern speaks Spanish or Chinese, or has advanced computer skills, it would be a great benefit to the program.
Additional Information:
We would be happy to provide additional information over the phone or via email.
