Agency/Firm's Mission:
Numenta is a small startup creating a new technology and software platform based on the theory of hierarchical temporal memory (HTM). HTM itself is a theory of the neocortex developed by Jeff Hawkins and described in his book entitled "On Intelligence". The Numenta Platform is a set of tools, including embedded learning algorithms and an optimized runtime engine, that enables self-training and pattern recognition based on the theories of HTM.

The founders of Numenta are Jeff Hawkins, Donna Dubinsky and Dileep George. Hawkins and Dubinsky were co-founders of Palm Computing and Handspring and have worked together for a dozen years. Dileep George has worked with Hawkins at the Redwood Neuroscience Institute since the summer of 2003 and has extended and formalized Hawkins'' theory of the neocortex.

Value of the internship to the Agency/Firm:
Numenta gets exposed to bright, creative people, who may approach problems in a unique way. Numenta also gets to evaluate the performance of potential future employees in real work situations.
Value of the internship to the Intern:
The intern will get an opportunity to experience life in a top-tier high tech startup. Since Numenta is a small company, interns get exposed to a wide range of tasks and to every level of the company. They can have a direct impact on the company’s product, and interact with key corporate partners.
Job Description:
The job commitment is full time, with flexible work days. The intern reports to the VP Engineering and will be assigned one or more mentors who will direct specific tasks. Numenta’s interns will get an opportunity to experiment with, and extend, our core HTM learning algorithms and software tools. Some example projects include:

a) Explore algorithm parameter spaces in the context of a machine vision task
b) Suggest novel methods to automatically adapt the parameters for a given task
c) Compare different versions of the learning algorithm on sample data sets
d) Design and implement visualization tools
e) Suggest and implement improvements or new algorithms based on above experience with existing algorithms.

Management Goals:
The supervisor ensures the assigned projects are relevant to the company’s goals and aligned with the intern’s interests and capabilities. The supervisor is a full time employee of the company. The intern is expected to submit regular (weekly) status reports by email, participate in project discussions, and attend regular engineering meetings. The intern will be expected to present a summary of their work to the company during the last week of the internship. Depending on the project, the intern may be expected to present to external customers or corporate partners.
Special Job Requirements:
Desired Qualifications And Skill Set
- Enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies in CS, EE or related disciplines (graduation date no later than 2009).
- Experience with machine learning and pattern recognition algorithms. Good understanding of probability theory, such as Bayesian models.
- Solid programming skills in at least one language, preferably Python or C++
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Motivated self-starter.
