Agency/Firm's Mission:
The University of California, San Francisco Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at the San Francisco General Hospital consists of laboratories with two areas of focus: Cellular and Molecular Biology and Biomechanics. These laboratories perform basic research in fracture biology and mechanics pertaining to key issues facing orthopaedics. The laboratories are located on the hospital campus and are composed of medical students, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, MDs, and PhD scientists.
Value of the internship to the Agency/Firm:
The intern will receive basic training and experience in various laboratory techniques in essential techniques, which are likely to include histology, histomorphometry, immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization, and microarray assay analyses. In the biomechanics laboratory, the individuals will gain expertise in basic biomechanical testing techniques.

The intern will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in an academic laboratory affiliated with a major teaching institution and County Hospital.
Job Description:
The intern will be a part of the laboratory team, and will be expected to participate in full-time research activities. These activities will be coordinated through the Chief of Service (Theodore Miclau, MD) for Orthopaedic Surgery, as well as the Laboratory Director for Cellular and Molecular Biology (Ralph Marcucio, PhD). In addition, the intern will work closely with a more senior member of the lab to provide day-to-day instruction.
Management Goals:
The intern will receive close supervision on the project in which they are working. They will interact on a daily basis with their senior lab member and possibly the laboratory director. They will interact with the Orthopaedic Surgery Chief of Service on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
Special Job Requirements:
Successful applicants should have some basic laboratory skills in either cellular or molecular biology or in biomechanics.

SFGH is located in the eastern portion of the city. Transportation to and from the hospital could be accomplished by BART. There are UCSF shuttles to and from the BART station to SFGH.
