Agency/Firm's Mission:
Kao & Company works with a range of private and public sector clients on a global basis. While each engagement is unique, certain themes recur. They include helping an organization to clarify its desired future state, generating ways of communicating its desired future state to a variety of constituents, designing an innovation strategy, and supporting the efforts of innovation teams and senior leadership to execute in a variety of ways.
Value of the internship to the Agency/Firm:
Our work ranges from advisory engagements with clients, to non-profit advocacy for national innovation policy, to development of original ideas through books and articles. The intern will help our small office with research, program development and tasks that emerge through our work.
Value of the internship to the Intern:
Kao & Company is a boutique advisory firm, but it works with a fascinating range of private and public sector organizations worldwide. John Kao, the firm founder and CEO, is Yale College '72 and Yale Medical School '77. He then completed an MBA at Harvard Business School and went on to teach at HBS for 14 years. He has been dubbed "Mr Creativity" by The Economist. His recent book, Innovation Nation, was picked by Business Week as one of the ten best books of 2007. His earlier book, Jamming: The Art and Discipline of Business Creativity, was a Business Week bestseller and was published in 12 languages.
Job Description:
Our office works 9 to 5 but some flexibility will be required. The intern will be engaged principally in research and program development. She or he will report directly to John Kao and his colleague, Lance Knobel. The typical day will rarely be "typical".
Management Goals:
The ideal intern will be an agile thinker, able to synthesize her or his research concisely and effectively. Kao & Company operates on the model of a Hollywood production company: the small core team is supplemented as needed by a trusted network of specialists and domain experts. The bonus for the intern is that work could range across many different projects. The flip side is that everyone also needs to be self-reliant and willing to take on whatever task needs doing.
Special Job Requirements:
Our offices are in the San Francisco Presidio. There is a free shuttle service to the Presidio from San Francisco's downtown, but a car is extremely useful.
