| KIDS for the BAY is a project of Earth Island Institute. Our mission is to collaborate with teachers to inspire environmental consciousness in children and cultivate a love of learning. KIDS for the BAY is seeking an Intern for our 2008 Summer Camp Program for youth ages 4-10.

| The internship position is of value to the Employer because the Summer Camp Leaders need assistance during the weeks of summer camp. The Intern will be of much help to the Leaders, in assisting with camp activities, giving the Leaders needed breaks during the camp, and giving the Leaders opportunities to prepare for the next activity. |
| Value of the internship to the Intern: |
| The Summer Camp Intern will gain experience working with 4-10 year old youth in an outdoor setting. The Intern will learn how to teach environmental and science education to children while managing a group of children in the outdoors. The Intern will also learn best practices in environmental education from the Summer Camp Leaders. |
| Job Description: |
| KIDS for the BAY conducts six weeks of summer camp every summer.
The dates of the 2008 camps are as follows:
June 16- June 20: 8-10 year old camp
June 23- June 27: 8-10 year old camp
July 7- July 11: 5-7 year old camp and 4-6 year old camp
July 14- July 18: 5-7 year old camp and 4-6 year old camp
July 21- July 25: 5-7 year old camp
July 28-August 1: 8-10 year old camp
The 5-7 year old and 8-10 year old camps run from 9am to 4pm; the 4-6 year old camps run from 9am to 3pm. Camp Leaders and Inters need to arrive at the camp site early to prepare for the day, and usually stay at the camp site 20-30 minutes after the campers have left for the day.
The summer camps have a maximum of sixteen campers per week and each week is led by two KIDS for the BAY employees (Summer Camp Leaders).
Job Responsibilities:
The Intern will assist the Summer Camp Leaders in managing and conducting the six weeks of summer camp. The Intern will supervise the children during lunch and free/play times while the Summer Camp Leaders are preparing activities. The Intern will also have opportunities to lead certain activities. Please note that the Intern will not be left alone with the campers at any time.
The Intern may also assist the Summer Camp Program Manager in preparing materials and equipment in June, prior to the start of the summer camps.
Reporting Structure:
The Summer Camp Intern reports to the Education Director, Sheela Shankar. During the weeks of summer camp, the Intern reports directly to the Summer Camp Leaders. There are two Leaders during each week of camp.
A “typical” day would include the following:
8:30am: Meet at Summer Camp Location
Help Leaders prepare materials and equipment
8:50am-9:10am: Campers arrive; supervise campers while parents
are signing in their children
9:10am-3:45pm: Assist Leaders with activities; supervise campers
during lunch and play/free time
3:45pm-4:10pm: Campers leave; supervise campers while parents are
signing out their children
Note: Camp hours for the two weeks of 4-6 year old camp is from 9am-3pm.
There will be opportunities for the Intern to lead certain activities (i.e. reading a book to the children) under the supervision of the Camp Leaders.

| Management Goals: |
| The Supervisor will work with the Intern to make sure the experience is beneficial to and positive for all parties.
We expect the Intern to be responsible, be able to manage time and tasks efficiently, be able to take direction and supervision from Supervisor(s) and Camp Leaders, be a positive communicator, and have an interest in education, environmental or science education, and/or working with youth. The Supervisor will support the Intern and help to problem-solve any issues that may arise.
The Supervisor and the Camp Leaders are permanent full-time employees of KIDS for the BAY/Earth Island Institute.

| Special Job Requirements: |
| Reliable transportation is needed to get to each camp location (around the Berkeley area), however the Intern will most likely arrange to be picked up and dropped off by one or more Camp Leaders during the weeks of summer camp. The KIDS for the BAY office is easily accessible by public transportation.
Any experience working with children is helpful. Enthusiasm and interest in working with children is a must!
